Dr. Jean-Luc Niel is a board-certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon proudly serving patients in Ellicott City, Maryland, and surrounding communities. Licensed in the state of Maryland, Dr. Niel brings a wealth of global experience, military service, and advanced surgical training to his role at Howard County Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, where he has been a valued member since 2019 and currently serves as junior partner.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Niel was raised across multiple continents—including France, Brazil, and Mexico—before moving to the United States at age 15. He completed both his undergraduate and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees at the University of Connecticut in 1994 and 1998, respectively.
Following dental school, Dr. Niel was commissioned into the United States Air Force as a general dentist, serving in Washington, D.C., and Turkey. He completed his advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Travis Air Force Base in California in 2008. His distinguished military career included service as Chief of Oral Surgery at Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he provided expert surgical care to wounded warriors returning from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Dedicated to education and leadership, Dr. Niel served as Program Director for the Oral Surgery Residency at Travis AFB in 2012 and later held the same position at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2015.
After 20 years of Active Duty service, Dr. Niel retired from the U.S. Air Force in December 2018 and transitioned into civilian practice. His vast surgical experience, academic background, and compassionate approach to care have made him a trusted name in oral and maxillofacial surgery across Maryland.
Dr. Niel is a proud Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and an active member of:
- Middle Atlantic Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
- Maryland Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
- American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
He resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife Elisa. Outside the office, Dr. Niel enjoys golfing and international travel, reflecting his lifelong passion for global cultures and connection.
